Sure, it’s nice to be able to provide our children with nice clothes, fun toys, and the best in home entertainment systems. But when the rubber meets the road, we all know those things don’t really matter. What really matters is that our kids learn how to become strong, confident, capable, kind adults.

Unfortunately, those qualities don’t just happen. They take years to develop. We get ourselves into trouble when we notice just how far down the totem pole we’ve allowed those things to slide. Then we quickly spring into action to rectify our mistakes and their greedy, selfish, lazy tendencies (that we’ve often enabled).

So, here’s our challenge: vigorously put things in place (like chores and boundaries) that help our kids grow in the right ways, then walk alongside your child as they do hard things and learn hard lessons. And remember, if being mild mannered was good enough for Superman, it is good enough for you.

Vigorous let us be in attaining our ends, and mild in our method of attainment.

(Lord Newborough, (1736-1807))

Peace begins with a pause,
